Suggestions for coping with pet loss
by animal communicator Sarah Messina
For some, the loss is recent. For others, it has been carried since childhood. It's not uncommon for a pet loss to have an equal or greater impact than a human loss. You may suffer guilt about how your pet has passed away, loneliness and uncertainty. As an animal communicator, a large part of my work involves communicating with dying pets, pets in spirit, and supporting people as they work through their pet loss grief. There's no easy way around it. Losing a pet is a deeply sorrowful, often traumatic experience. Here are some suggestions for coping with pet loss:
In the days and/or weeks following the passing of your beloved animal:
- Let the tears flow. Don't hold back your feelings.
- Read the Rainbow Bridge poem, and any other pet loss poetry or stories that touch you.
- Share recollections of your beloved with supportive friends and family.
- Spend time in the healing presence of other animals.
- Don't hesitate to take time off work if you feel it is appropriate.
- Light a candle or arrange a ceremony to honour their memory.
- You may like to create an indoors altar or memorial garden spot.
- It is never too late to say something to your beloved animal.
- Reach out for support, whenever you need it. Be gentle to yourself.
... and further down the track:

- Accept that the grieving process (and length) is different for everyone. There is no right or wrong.
- Tell your story as many times as you need. You do not need to 'get over it'.
- Allow plenty of time before inviting another animal into your life. There's no rush.
- Create a memory book with photos of your pet and communications they shared.
- One of my clients arranged a party to celebrate her late cat's life (and rebirth). She invited close friends, family and people who had played important roles in the life of her cat. Listen to your heart and allow yourself to be guided to celebrate the life and death of your animal in whatever way feels most appropriate for you.
- If your grief is strong, seek professional support. There are many wonderful counsellors, support groups, healers and communicators who can help you through this journey.
Animal Communication: In Loving Memory
Animals that have passed on can be contacted with animal communication. Many of my clients have told me that this has helped them through the grieving process. Losing your pet is often a traumatic experience and getting in touch with them can help to heal our pain. I offer specialized “In Loving Memory” consults for people who have recently lost a beloved pet. These communications can cover:
Re-uniting with your animal’s spirit
Discussion of life memories
Lessons / reasons your animal was in your life
Messages your animal has for you
What is needed for healing
How they would like for you to honour their spirit
Ritual suggestions and actions for closure
Anything you wish to say to your animal
In Loving Memory consultations are quite beautiful. The messages and wisdom shared by animals in spirit are humbling and meaningful. It is always a pleasure to pass on their messages, and the opportunity for reconnection is an honour to share. If you would like to arrange an 'In Loving Memory' consult for your pet in spirit, please do let me know. The grief process is a delicate one so be kind to yourself. I am happy to offer you my support and counsel throughout the grieving process.
