Terms like "animal communicator", "pet psychic" and "pet whisperer" have come to mean different things to different people. These terms are used interchangeably, but they often describe completely different roles. Here's an overview of the common terminology which may help to clear up the confusion in the world of animal communication.

Animal Communicator:

I call myself an animal communicator, as it's the term most people are comfortable with. An animal communicator is one who can understand and translate the thoughts, feelings and sensations of an animal. Stictly speaking, an animal communicator is not an animal trainer, behaviourist or healer (though communicators skilled in these areas may use these techniques in combination with animal communication). The term animal communicator might also be identified by species (eg. cat communicator, dog communicator) or as a pet communicator.

Pet Psychic / Pet Medium:

A pet psychic (sometimes called an animal psychic) is usually just a fancy term for an animal communicator. It's been made popular by newspaper journalists, magazines & tv shows like The Pet Psychic. Some animal communicators avoid this term, as they feel it carries negative connotations of 'reading' the animal without permission. The term pet clairvoyant falls under similar classification as pet psychic. The term pet medium is often used interchangeably with pet psychic. It carries the added implication of an ability to speak to pets in spirit. In actuality, any animal communicator may speak to animals in spirit, it is not a gift reserved for those defined as pet mediums, however this may be their specialty.

Animal Whisperer:

Animal whisperer is perhaps the most commonly misunderstood terminology for an animal communicator. The term animal whisperer can describe several different ways of working with animals, and much confusion stems from this. This term is conjoined with the name of the species one works with, the most common being horse whisperers and dog whisperers. Both can simply mean 'animal communicator', or they can refer to a type of trainer. In this case, a horse whisperer is a horse trainer who uses gentle methods of natural horsemanship , horse psychology, body language and non-verbal communication to work with and 'listen' to horses. The term was first attributed to horseman Daniel Sullivan, and later to various trainers including John S. Rarey, Monty Roberts, Buck Brannaman & Pat Parelli. In the same way, the popularity of Ceaser Milan's branding as a 'Dog Whisperer' has led to much confusion on this term. In the case of Ceaser Milan, a dog whisperer is a type of dog behaviourist / trainer.  An animal communicator might also be labelled as a dog whisperer, or pet whisperer, but strictly speaking they do not offer training.

Interspecies Telepathic Communicator:

Interspecies telepathic communicator is a term coined by Penelope Smith who formulated the code of ethics which many animal communicators abide by. It is used interchangeably with the term animal communicator.

Animal Intuitive:

Can be related to an animal healer, and often the two are used in combination. Animal intuitive may be used to describe one whose skills are stongly clairsentient. Some animal communicators add the term 'intuitive' to their title (eg. Intuitive Animal Communicator) to differentiate their abilities from that of an animal behaviourist or trainer.

Pet Psychiatrist / Psychologist:

These terms describe an animal behaviorist - someone who deals with misbehaviour problems. Animal behaviourists may have a zoology or psychology background. Animal behaviourists commonly address issues with corrective behavioural training and veterinary behaviourists may prescribe medication for animal problems.
